Dear Guests,
We're incredibly excited to welcome you to Germany in just 6 weeks for the wedding! We wanted to share some information that will make your travel more convenient and cost-effective.
First, there's a new ticket available for 49€ a month that allows unlimited travel on public transport throughout Germany (regional trains, buses, trams, metro, S-bahn, etc.). However, it doesn’t include high-speed ICE and IC trains, or private long-distance bus routes like Flixbus. The ticket is sold as a monthly subscription, so remember to cancel it before the month ends to avoid being charged again.
The easiest way for overseas travelers to get this ticket is through the Hamburg Transport Association's app, HVV switch. The app is available worldwide and accepts credit card and PayPal payments. You can only get this ticket electronically; it’s not available at ticket counters. Download the HVV switch app here:
If you're planning on using more than 2-4 regional connections, this ticket is a great deal. Please note, kids under 6 travel for free but anyone older will need their own ticket.
Secondly, to avoid high roaming charges, we recommend getting an eSIM for your phone. The simplest way is to use the Airalo app and choose a 30-day all-Europe plan for 10-20€. There is also a Germany-specific plan which is slightly cheaper, but it doesn't work in Switzerland, Turkey and the UK, whereas the all-Europe plan does for a few euros more. The eSIM plans don’t automatically renew.
To use an eSIM, your device must support it. For Apple devices, iPhone XS and later models support eSIM. For Android devices, ensure that it’s a recent model, typically from 2019 onwards, such as Google Pixel 3 or Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer models. Download the Airalo app here:
If you plan on keeping your physical SIM in the device, remember to turn off data roaming for that SIM so you don’t accidentally use your Australian / American connection.
The eSIMs are data only, so you will need to use e.g. Facetime or WhatsApp to place calls.
We can’t wait to see you all and celebrate together! Safe travels!
Best Wishes,
Sue, Steph and Jakob
